Game of the year nominees are:

  • Astro Bot
  • Balatro
  • Black Myth: Wukong
  • Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
  • Metaphor: Refantazio

Yes, DLCs are included in categories. Kind of ridiculous TBH.

How can Shadow of ErdTree be a contender for game of the year when it’s a DLC/expansion pack?

They adjusted the rules this year I believe, they now allow DLCs in GOTY, and also things like new seasons to games. It is dumb, and I personally think it removes what little credibility the game awards had(which wasn’t a lot to me).

Will catch up on all the adverts that are if interest the next day.

It’s bigger than lots of full games and has a proper beginning/middle/end. In the old days, it would have just been a sequel.

I love Elden Ring, but a lot of the asset work on making a game is done for the devs when they go to work on DLC. Not sure if its right to compare with games that had to make a full game from scratch. Haven’t played shadow of the erdtree yet though, maybe it is transformative.

Assets get reused all the time. Elden Ring base game is reusing assets from Sekiro and Dark Souls 3. I haven’t played Rebirth but I’m pretty sure it’s also reusing assets from the previous Final Fantasy remake.

No Satisfactory, V Rising, Core Keeper, Throne and Liberty in any of the categories. Probably because they did not pay to get into the list. But we got remake of Silen Hill 2 in many of them and a DLC as GOTY. Sony will win because they bought the contest after Concord flop or dude from Balatro because he poker played all his earnings to make his dreams come true.

I meant Balatro, yes. Didn’t play it (didn’t play the others either hah) but would be interesting to see it win. And I hear it’s quite good

I would imagine Astro Bot and Balatro would have to be the frontrunners given their reception and popularity.

Astro bot and balatro make sense. I hope balatro wins.

Black myth is Chinese propaganda or psyOp. Has to be. People did not seem to care for this game?

Erd is dlc which is BS. It will probably win cus these games are cult status.

FF7 is weird. 1 part of many in a remake. People seemed pretty mid about it?

Metaphor felt weird in the demo. These also reach cult status. I could see this winning though with the added recency bias.

Considering it’s a press award, I’d be shocked if one of the lowest reviewed games ever to get nominated won. Feels like compensating for none of these being huge sellers (which might also be part of the reason that DLC is in there). And even then, BM:W only sold one out of four outside of China. Says a lot about the state of Western AAA gaming this year.

The state of AAA gaming is that releases slowed way down, resulting in way less output, which means you’re going to have fewer winners, by the numbers. Not every year can be like last year.

I assume that early access games are in the running when they exit EA. Presumably, that’s when they’re at their strongest. Doesn’t seem to me like it’d be fair to treat them as being entered when they enter EA, as they aren’t fully developed yet.

Kinda disappointed that Pacific Drive wasn’t nominated for indie game of the year, I think it deserves a spot at least.
