A new type of technology will connect Tai Rāwhiti communities to civil defence during disasters - even when all other communications are wiped out.

During Cyclone Gabrielle, power and cellphone connections to most of Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay were cut, but Tai Rāwhiti’s Civil Defence has now come up with a solution, as part of its new kit for disaster preparedness.

The article doesn’t say if it’s using meshtastic, but if it ends up that it is, would be a good article for [email protected].

Glad to see the concept spreading, whatever the tech is! :)

Yeah it sounds very much like Meshtastic to me, i’ve been waiting/hoping for someone to get access to a high point in Hawkes Bay that can be a repeater back to Wharite and from thence to Wellington.

Its kinda surprising, but by the looks of this tool there’s actually more peaks with LOS than you’d initially guess although all the best ones are already in use by telcos and emergency radio services etc.
